Education Outreach for Primary Schools

Discover Opera and Discover Singing – Music Generation Waterford

In 2021 we developed our education outreach package, and in conjunction with Music Generation Waterford launched a new ‘Discover Opera project for local primary schools. Generously funded with the support of the Tomar Trust, the project included a series of online and classroom workshops, culminating in an exciting new Discover Opera trail for participating schools at Lismore Castle during the 2021 festival.  Participating schools in our education outreach programme included Scoil Mhuire Tallow, Modeligo National School, Fews National School, St. James’s National School in Stradbally and Portlaw National School.

New for 2022 is a Discover Singing project for primary school children in partnership with Music Generation Waterford – providing access and opportunity for children and young people in Waterford to experience high quality performance music education where they live, learn and play

“I want to thank you most sincerely for facilitating a most incredible morning in our school recently. The children and adults attending were truly blown away by your performance. From the moment you arrived, you captivated the attention of every child and adult present and many a discussion about opera has been had since you left. As a School Principal, I feel that musical experiences like this are such an important part of school life for children in Ireland. There is so much real-life musical learning to be had.  Once again, a heartfelt thank you.”
– Scoil Íosaf National School, Castlemartyr, Co. Cork

Education Outreach from Blackwater Valley Opera Festival and Mobile Music Machine

Blackwater Valley Opera Festival has partnered with Mobile Music Machine since 2019 to further our ambition of fostering a love of classical music in younger people in communities throughout the Blackwater Valley. Mobile Music Machine, a classical music education company, delivers education outreach workshops in primary schools across Waterford. This musical initiative has been a resounding success, reaching almost 2,000 primary school children throughout the region since 2019.

Each workshop is thoughtfully put together and covers all aspects of classical music. The instructors, professional musicians themselves, will introduce their instruments and chat about sound, rhythm, harmony, melody, emotion, and listening. They delve into the history of music and teach children about composers in a light-hearted and fun way. These relaxed, informal sessions provide a chance for children to experience live performance and to get in touch with classical music in a way that is not alienating. We aim to rewrite the narrative of classical music in a way that is truly approachable while still retaining the high quality of the art form.

It is no surprise then that this thriving education outreach partnership between BVOF and Mobile Music Machine will continue into 2022 and beyond. Local schools who would like to invite Mobile Music Machine to deliver their interactive and engaging classical music workshops can submit an expression of interest form below.
