The Blackwater Valley Opera Festival is delighted to extend its evening concerts at Dromore Yard; there will be two this year. The yard is a hidden gem on the banks of the Blackwater River.  The lands surrounding Dromore yard had been in the Barry family since the early 1500s.  Today, the farm yard plays host to the concert series of the festival, our audiences can meander through the yard where the old buildings shelter tables for a sit-down dinner and there is now an atmospheric bar in the old cow barn. Performances take place inside the large tin Dutch barn, hung with candle-lit chandeliers.

The sense of connection with the scenic beauty of the river beyond is helped by the large sliding doors that act as a transparent backdrop to the concerts. Daylight floods in before the performances start, and audiences can witness the darkening sky as the sun goes down when the candles come into their own. The intimacy and connection between performers and audiences and nature is very special.

Last year we experienced the virtuoso talent of Nadege Rochat on her Stradivarius cello accompanied by Dearbhla Collins on concert grand piano. This year Nadege returns ‪on Thursday evening, ‪at 8.15pm, with two other highly accomplished musicians,  Pablo Barragán  and Maki Wiederkehr to form a cello – clarinette -piano trio. We bring you this unique concert thanks to the very generous support of the Mullin and Fund families.

Before both concerts, a three-course sit-down affair will be prepared by our Guest Chef, Rose Greene a profound, contemporary influence on the Irish culinary scene.  We are delighted that Rose is prepared to leave her menagerie of pigs behind in Westmeath to cook for us. Dinner will be served in the old, agricultural buildings of the yard. Update; While the formal dining option is now sold-out (Picnic available) for the Thursday evening, Concert tickets are still available. Formal dining & picnic options are available for Sunday evening’s Concert

Chefs Rose and Margaux have been working hard this last year after moving to Rose’s family home from France. They have set up their business in fermented foods and are busy creating a natural homestead, which supports regenerative agriculture.

Their ethos is simple, respect and generously towards our environment, working with instead of against their natural surroundings, listening to the needs of the land. While still in early stages, they currently share their time, energy and space with a couple of saddle back pigs, some curious hens and a multitude of plant species.

Their menus, created for this special Blackwater Valley Opera Festival series of evening concerts are very much inspired from their surroundings and their vision of the future of food and how we, as individuals, can make a difference.

Hodmedods, Suffolk, England

With a growing need for us to be turning towards a more plant based diet, getting a local source of pulses and grains is difficult in Ireland, as their are very limited producers. Thankfully across the water we have found Hodmedods, who work along with numerous UK farmers to produce pulses and grains. They have an exceptional range of products, most notably traditional peas such as carlin and marrowfat peas, which can be used in similar ways to your more far away chickpeas.
