This year, at The Blackwater Valley Opera Festival we are delighted to present Gioachino Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri. An Operatic tale of intrigue, comedic mischance, and the triumph of love – and of strong women! This incredible Opera was premiered in Venice in 1813, and has been entertaining audiences since that time. Tickets have sold incredibly fast and only one ticket remains for our Grand Finale. Tikckets for Wednesday and Friday are still available here.
Rossini wrote L’Italiana in Algeri when he was 21, he said that he’d composed the opera in just 18 days. In such a short amount of time he managed to create a masterpiece, with incredibly elegant melodies. The opera tells the tale of Elvira and Isabella, who must make a plan to ensure that love conquers all. Elvira loves Mustafa, and Isabella loves Lindoro. It wouldn’t be a Rossini opera if the path to happiness was smooth all the way so expect some drama. As you would expect from a Rossini opera, there is plenty of wonderful music along the way to the final rousing resolution.
L’Italiana in Algeri is set around the Algerian and the Mediterranean coasts. Chef Eunice Power has used this region as inspiration for our 3 course offering at all performances Opera Performances. The menu includes Roast Aubergine, Slow Roast Shoulder of Lamb with Ras al Hanout and Feta and Honey Cheesecake with roast almonds and blueberries on kadaif pastry. All meals must be pre booked and pre paid. Price €50.00 p.p., excl. €3.50 sales commission per order.
